Economic development is linked to structural change and the emergence of the industrial sector. This chapter focuses on structural change and the relationships between agriculture and industry in the course of economic development. Structural change is not limited to industrialisation. It also refers to other changes in the structure
of the economy. One of the interesting questions raised in this chapter is whether manufacturing will continue to play the leading role it has played in the past two-and-a-half centuries.
Tables 8.2 and 8.3 and figures 8.2 and 8.3 present data on changes in the structure of production since 1950. Tables 8.5 and 8.6 present data on the evolution of the terms of trade between developing and developed countries.
